Crugers, NY, a Historical Hamlet, and Village

Crugers, New York is a census-designated village and hamlet located in the county of Cortlandt, New York. The population at the 2020 Census was 1,549. Crugers was originally a small settlement in what was then called Cortland County in New York until the mid-eighteen hundreds. Crugers, New York is located on what was then known as the Western frontier between Cortlandt and Tonawanda, two towns in New York's Tonawanda region. It is named after Cruger, who is buried in a cemetery on the grounds of the town's old post office. The land that Crugers originally owned was located in what is today known as Cortlandt. He was also the one to first christen the village. It was originally called Crocker. According to legend, he made the name from a series of letters: "Croo" spelled backward is "Cow's eye." Crugers, New York is home to several festivals. The most popular is the Crugers Day. This festival began in 1970 when a group of teenagers decided to do a "Save Our Village" fundraiser. It was a huge success as the teenagers raised over a hundred dollars and sent it all to Crugers to be used for projects. In 2020, Crugers celebrated its bicentennial. The town plans on holding another event in 2020.


There are several local businesses to be found in this area. A few of them include the Cortlandt Golf Course, the Cortlandt Country Club, the Crugers Memorial Golf Course, and the Cortlandt Restaurant. This area is home to a large number of shops as well. One of the larger retail centers in this area is at the Cortlandt Plaza. This store is also known for being the largest single shopping center in the United States and has a shopping mall at its end. It is one of the busiest in the entire country. There are many other stores throughout the region as well.
