Crompond, New York, is a village and census-designated area located on the east bank of Lake George in Westchester County. It is a small community located about thirty-five miles north of New York City and about three miles from New York State. The population of the village is slightly over two thousand at the 2020 census. Crompond was founded in 1856, but there are records that show its existence as far back as eighteen hundred years. There are many historical aspects of the village that make it unique. It was originally an early settlement along the Hudson River. One of the first settlers was the Smiths, who were part of a group of eleven, who built a cabin near present day Crompond. The Smiths built the cabin to serve as a place for them to live during their time in New York City. Later on, other settlers joined the group and the village grew in size. There are also several restaurants and bars that offer local, specialty, fresh foods, which can be purchased for a reasonable price. This makes the town very popular with the residents of New York City. In addition to the historical aspect, Crompond has a rich agricultural history as well. Its farmers grew a variety of crops including corn, wheat, beans, barley, and oats. These products were then used to make flour and made into bread. One of the most popular types of bread sold in the Village is the Irish corn bread, which is made from cornmeal that has been fermented to produce an authentic Irish flavor. Other popular varieties include wheat bread and rye bread.
